On Instagram, the former president shared a sweet vintage photo of himself and infant Sasha, writing, wishing her a wonderful birthday! He had enjoyed watching her develop into the clever, gorgeous, and compassionate young woman she is now. And she’ll always be his baby girl, no matter how old she gets.

The former first lady provided an update on her daughters’ life in one of her final appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, telling the presenter that they now have “boyfriends and real lives.” Michelle described Sasha, who is in college, and Malia, 23, as “simply remarkable young people” who are not only “doing quite well” on their own.

“They were huge fans of the Jonas Brothers. They’re now bringing back grown males “The author of Becoming cracked a joke. “It used to be that there were just pop bands. They now have boyfriends and are living normal lives.”

When Barack Obama finished his second term in office in January 2017, the mother of two described how she and her husband worked to ready their girls for the transfer from the White House to their private lives. “When my mom was parenting us, I listened to everything she said,” Michelle explained. “‘I’m not parenting babies; I’m raising genuine people to be out in the world,’ she explained. I kept that in mind when I was with the females.”

Mrs. Obama talked up about how she and her husband raised their kids in a 2019 interview with PEOPLE, saying: “One of the most important things we can give our children as parents is the freedom to make their own choices in life. With Sasha and Malia, we aim to respect the individual flames that each of them carries. That’s what I admire about them: they’re their own individuals. They also require space to relax and explore.”
