He is most known for his appearances as the eleventh Doctor in the BBC series and Prince Philip in the Netflix series The Crown, for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. Smith was cast as the younger version of Ralph Fiennes’ character in Martin McDonagh’s dark satirical of In Bruges (2008). But his sequences were cut from the finished picture. He appeared in the 2009 short film Together as well as the 2010 feature picture Womb. A  report was sent on 2013 that Smith signed on to appear in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut Lost River.

Mathew directorial debut, the short film Cargese,  announced in May 2013 on Sky Arts. Smith had a minor part in Terminator Genisys (2015) as the encapsulation of Skynet. He was to have greater screen time in the sixth and seventh films in the franchise.

Mathew was the star of the action spine-chiller thriller Patient Zero on November 20, 2014. Smith co-starred with Jared Leto in Sony’s Spider-Man: Turn Off Morbius in January 2019. It was announced in February 2019 that he joined Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho, alongside Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy.
