About Tom Rice and his Interesting Life

Hugh Thompson Rice Jr, also known as Tom Rice is an American politician as well as a lawyer. In this article, we will talk about Tom Rice, his political career, early life, childhood, and his family.

Early Life

Born on 4th August 1957, Rice grew up with his mother and brother in Myrtle Beach after the divorce of his parents. In his free time, Rice started doing part-time work such as grocery store bag boy, busboy, and night shifts as a fry cook. His father passed away when Rice was 16.

Tom completed his master’s in accounting from the University of South Carolina and also accomplished a JD degree from the same university.

He has worked in well-renowned companies such as Deloitte and Touche, along with which he prepared for CPA and earned his CPA certificates.

He married Wrenzie Calhoun ​in 1982 and has three children with her.

Political Career

When Tom entered politics, he aimed to make America competitive and focused on economic development. He used his knowledge and experience gained as a businessman and an accountant student for the country’s growth. He also served on the Trade, Select Revenue Measures, and Social Security Subcommittees.

Rice entered politics in 2010 and was elected to the US House in 2012. He was also the Horry County Council chair. He defeated Jay Jordan, Randal Wallace, Dick Withington, James Mader, Chad Prosser, Katherine Jenerette, and Renee Culler on June 12. In the June 26 runoff, he also defeated Andre. On 6th November, he defeated Gloria Bromell Tinubu in the general election. 

He resigned from the seat in 2013 but was reelected in 2014. He is currently serving as the United States Representative for South Carolina’s 7th congressional district.
