Joe Manchin was born in 1947 in Farmington, West Virginia, a small coal mining town. Manchin was the second of five children born to Mary O. (née Gouzd) and John Manchin in Farmington, West Virginia, a small coal mining town. The name “Manchin” comes from the Italian “Mancini.” His paternal grandparents were Czechoslovak immigrants, while his father was of Italian origin. He belongs to the Welsh Friends Caucus.

Farmington’s mayors were his family, father and grandparents. A.J. Manchin, his uncle, served in the West Virginia House of Delegates and afterwards as Secretary of State and Treasurer.

In 1965, he was awarded a football scholarship at West Virginia University, but his career was cut short due to an injury suffered during practice.
In 1988, Manchin launched the coal brokerage Enersystems, which he helped operate until he went into politics full-time. When he was elected Secretary of State of West Virginia in 2000, he entrusted Enersystems to his son Joseph. In his financial statement for 2020, Manchin stated that his non-public Enersystems shares were worth between $1 million and $5 million, and that he received $5,211,154 in dividend income from them between 2011 and 2020. He received almost $500,000 in dividends in 2020. Enersystems accounts for 71% of Manchin’s investment income and 30% of his total net worth.

Manchin is a certified pilot and a member of the National Rifle Association. He married Gayle Heather Conelly on August 5, 1967. Heather Manchin Bresch (who was the CEO of Mylan, a pharmaceutical business situated in the Netherlands), Joseph IV, and Brooke are their three children.
