David Lowery directed, wrote, edited, and produced The Green Knight, a 2021 historical fantasy film based on the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Gawain, a nephew of King Arthur, is played by Dev Patel, who starts on a mission to test his strength and confront the Green Knight. A24 released The Green Knight in theatres on July 30, 2021 in the United States. The critical reception to the film was overwhelmingly positive.
Gawain is sitting alone on a throne in kingly regalia in a large hall. As a speaker tells his tale, a crown drops down from above. His head erupts in flames as the land holdings.
The Green Knight Storyline Explained
Gawain is awakened in a brothel by his lover, the commoner Essel, on Christmas morning. After being scolded by his mother Morgan le Fay, he goes to Camelot and attends a feast for the Round Table by his uncle King Arthur, who invites Gawain to accompany him. Le Fay performs a supernatural ritual in a tower. On horseback, the mysterious Green Knight enters Arthur’s court and confronts the knights, claiming that just about any knight who could really land a stroke on him will earn his green axe. He must, meanwhile, travel to the Green Chapel next Christmas, where he’s been greeted with or without an equal blow. The invitation is taken by Gawain. The Green Knight takes a knee and extended his hand instead of fighting. He is beheaded by Gawain. The Green Knight gets up and raises his headless body, remind Gawain of the contract, before laughing and riding away from the castle.Gawain’s tale is retold and his renown develops over the next year, but he still spends most of his time drunk. Gawain meets a youngster scavenging a dead battlefield on his quest. He directs Gawain in the direction of a stream that will take him to the Green Chapel. In exchange, Gawain hands him a coin. Shortly after, the scavenger and two other companions ambush Gawain, taking his axe, girdle, and horse, and tie him up. Gawain pursues, breaking his bonds with his sword.
He comes at an abandoned cottage late at night and goes to sleep in the bed. Gawain is startled awake by the ghost of a young woman named Winifred, who requests that Gawain retrieve her head from a neighboring spring. He finds her skeleton on the bed when he returns with her skull, toward which he adds the skull. The axe was returned to him the next morning.
Gawain meet a fox who will become his friend. Female giants have been seen walking through a valley. Gawain eventually comes at a castle inhabited by a Lord who notifies him that the Green Chapel is approaching and welcomes him to stay. A blindfolded old woman and the Lord’s wife are also gathered in the castle, offering seductive overtures to Gawain. The Lord proposes that they exchange what he finds while hunting for whatever Gawain uncovers at the castle. The Woman gave Gawain the green girdle the next morning, which she claims she fashioned herself. In exchange, Gawain accepts her approaches and ejaculates on the girdle. He is punished by the Lady because he is not a knight. This has already been observed by the elderly woman. Gawain tries to escape the castle, but in the bush he stumbles into to the Lord, who reminds him of their game. In compensation for the Lady’s actions, the Lord kisses Gawain, but Gawain refused to grant him the girdle. The Lord explains that he has kidnapped Gawain’s fox, but that he would rather free it.
Gawain comes at a stream where a boat awaiting him. The fox stops his path, appealing with Gawain to forsake the quest in a human voice. Gawain refuses instead and takes the boat to the church, where the Green Knight is asleep. The Knight swings the axe to close out the game, but stops short twice as Gawain flinches. Gawain flees and return to Camelot before the third stroke. When his uncle dies, he is knighted and thus becomes king. Gawain abandons Essel and marries a noblewoman, but Essel bears his son. His son dies in battle as an adult, and Gawain will become a loathed king after many years.
Gawain draws the green girdle from inside his abdomen as his castle is besieged and his family abandons him. His head is chopped and falls off.
Gawain awake in the Green Chapel, still kneeling on the pavement, from his vision. Gawain pulls down his girdle and accepts the blow. Gawain’s bravery is praised by the Green Knight. “Now, off with your head,” he growls, dragging his finger across Gawain’s throat.
A young girl discovers the King’s crown and places it on her head in a comment scene.
