Veteran actor-dancer Meenu Mumtaz, sister of famous comedian-filmmaker Mehmood, has died in Toronto, Canada.

Meenu Mumtaz of her 80s passed away on Friday (October 22) night following various health issues at a city hospital.

Mona Mathur Ali, wife of his younger brother Anwar Ali, said that Meenu Mumtaz was recently diagnosed with cancer.

“She was diagnosed with cancer a few days back, but it could not have been the reason for her demise, there were other health issues. She was in her best mood. We spoke to her on video call ten days ago, she is very sweet Was looking herself ready and smiling,” Mathur Ali told PTI.

She said that whenever Meenu Mumtaz visited India, she would meet her contemporaries like veteran actor Saira Banu.

Born in the 1940s to father Mumtaz Ali and mother Latifunisa Begum, a dancer and character artist in films, Meenu Mumtaz was one of four daughters and four sons.

The actor, whose real name was Malikunnisa, started out as a dancer and starred in several films during the 1950s and 1960s.

She made her acting debut with Sakhi Hatim (1955) and appeared in ‘Jab Raat Hai Aisi Matwali’, a popular song by Mughal-e-Azam, another hit song of Naya Daur ‘Reshmi Salwar Kurta Jali Ka’, ‘Sakhiya’. Today I appeared in ‘Need’. Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam Se Nahi’, ‘Bujh Mera Kya Maam Re’ from CID, etc.

Some of his other notable works include films like Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Taj Mahal, Ghunghat, Insan Jag Utha, Ghazal, Aladdin and Dharmaputra.

Meenu Mumtaz is survived by husband S Ali Akbar, a son and three daughters.
