Writer and executive producer Sarah Goodman said she brought some new elements to the I Know What You Did Last Summer series that set it apart from the source novel and its film adaptation.

The series is a contemporary version of the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan and the 1997 American slasher film of the same name about four young teenagers who are pursued by a hook-wielding killer.

Directed by Jim Gillespie, the film starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinz Jr. and Ryan Phillippe. It received mixed reviews from critics but did well commercially.

Goodman, best known for writing the popular series Preacher, Outsiders, Rake and Gossip Girls, said she gave the mystery thriller series a modern twist so it could appeal to current audiences.

“The last film was there and it was very short. Like it was in the 90s, it was a very different time, world and different characters.

“I used the same premise for the same book but it was very important for me to create new characters and put them in a modern world with modern technology, social media and all those other things. So, there are a lot of differences, Goodman said in a Zoom roundtable interview.

The show, which is set in Hawaii, features an ensemble cast of Madison Iseman, Bill Heck, Brian Tzu, Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore, Sebastian Amoruso, Fiona René, Cassie Beck, and Brooke Bloom.

Craig William McNeill of The Boy and Lizzy fame directed and executive produced the pilot for the series.

For Goodman, the challenge was to create a world full of characters and mysteries, she said.

“If one has eight hours to not only run or chase slashers, one has to create drama between the characters and the drama within the story. Basically, to drive the story and the key. There are so many different elements. It’s about keeping everyone’s interest and adding twists and turns,” she said.

The first four episodes of the series premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Friday.

The writer-producer admitted that while she was concerned during the show’s production, she hopes viewers will be interested in the new version of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

“I am worried and worried about everything. I hope people give it a chance and those who love the film will see it as a new thing. I have shown respect and love for the film and the book. But yes I am concerned,” she said, adding that Duncan would have been glad to see his version of the book.

Goodman said that he revisited the film before starting work on the show, and he revisited it after the team wrote it.

“I had to make sure I was honest and respectful to the new characters in the new world where I could.”

Produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television, I Know What You Did Last Summer will see its remaining episodes drop weekly, leading up to the season finale on November 12.
