Supriya Pathak is a household name in the acting world. Supriya met his mother Dina Pathak at Abhinay Ghatti. Sister Ratna Pathak is also an actress. The world is fascinated by the performance of her husband Pankaj Kapoor. Supriya is setting a new precedent these days and is recording his first audio playback at this age. You still wake up chirping when you talk about the theater. Supriya Pathak, who came to the world of voice through theater, film and television, has this exclusive conversation with Pankaj Shukla, consulting editor about his digital debut in a video interview. The interview will air on the Facebook and YouTube pages on Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. Here are some edited excerpts.
You are debuting in the world of voice at 60 years old, the new technology also has its own joy, what do you say about this?
Yes, you are absolutely right. I feel very excited. When you reach this age, when you have the opportunity to do something completely new, a new beginning has its own fun. People get bored with FM too. There is a lot of repetition of everything. Radio is associated with the memories of our childhood. For us, this was the only means of entertainment. It was also a source of income for artists. I also tried then, but Akashvani rejected my voice at the time. Later, I started my film career with ‘Kalyug’, then I got a call from All India Radio, but then I refused.
When you mentioned ‘Kalyug’, I was reminded of Jennifer Kendall (Shashi Kapoor’s wife) who suggested your name for this movie after seeing your play at Prithvi Theater.
My whole family has been associated with plays. My mother (Dina Pathak) used to do a lot of theater. My sister long ago. My favorite work, which is still my favorite, is ‘Maingurjari’, where I started from. Jennifer had seen my play ‘Biwiyon Ka Madrasa’. The zeal for pretending is not gone and it lives on in me even now. If I had the opportunity, I would still like to work in theater.
People were crazy about your innocence on screen for decades and then Sanjay Leela Bhansali introduced you in such a character that people started freaking out.
I am an actress. I will enjoy the new challenges that arise. For a long time I did good things, so when I did Dhankor (movie ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela’) people were amazed at how I could do it. But the owner took a little sympathy and people liked him in that role.
And you’ve also done an amazing job on the Audible podcast ‘Evil Nazar’. How much do you believe in superstition?
The ‘Buri Nazar’ audio program is an idea. This is the fear of a mother. Every mother fears that her children do not have the evil eye. We have tried to convey this idea through an interesting story on Audible. I don’t believe in superstition, but we have traditions that last centuries. I don’t deny it either. These are the things of the time of our grandmother, grandmother and mother.
Krishna is considered as the Guru of Leelas and also as Jagatguru, how much interest do you have in his hobbies?
(This conversation took place on Janmashtami day)
I read a lot Gita and learn a lot from him. It also helps me a lot in daily life. Every time you read the Gita, something new always comes out. Lord Krishna had so much knowledge. I see your Leela only in knowledge. Krishna’s jnana-Lilas impress me very much.
In this video interview, Supriya Pathak talks a lot about superstar Rajesh Khanna and the radio too. Rajesh Khanna’s famous Guru Kurta was designed by his father Baldev Pathak. You can watch this exclusive video interview on Facebook and YouTube page from 7pm on Saturday and 2pm on Sunday.
