Ukraine announced on Saturday that it has retaken a large portion of the battleground city of Sievierodonetsk in a rare counter-offensive against the Russian primary attack forces, which had been slowly pushing in the east.
In an eastern counter-offensive, Ukraine drives Russian forces back. Both Kyiv and Moscow claim victories in the Sievierodonetsk region. Macron emphasizes the need not to humiliate Russia. Ukraine has turned down Macron’s invitation to mediate.
The Ukrainian allegation could not be independently verified, and Moscow claimed that its troops were progressing in the country. However, it was the first time Kyiv claims to have mounted a major counter-offensive in Sievierodonetsk after losing ground there for days.
Over the last week, Russia has focused its forces in Sievierodonetsk for one of the war’s most significant land assaults. Moscow appears to be betting its effort on taking one of two eastern provinces it claims in favor of separatist proxies.
“The scenario in Sievierodonetsk, where street combat is underway, remains very severe,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in a Saturday evening speech.
Both sides believe to have suffered massive fatalities in the struggle for the little industrial city, a conflict that army experts believe will decide which party has the momentum for a long-term war in the following months.

While it is impossible to predict when the war will finish, Ukrainian Military Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said on Saturday that “my positive assessment is that it is possible to achieve this as soon as this year,” according to the defense ministry.
“The position in Sievierodonetsk, where street combat is underway, remains very severe,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in a Saturday evening speech.
“Next one will come to Poland, the Baltic nations, Slovakia, and many others,” Reznikov said at the GLOBSEC 2022 Bratislava Forum, according to a report on the ministry’s webpage. Which is why, in the coming, we must put a halt to Russia.”
In political terms, Kyiv chastised French President Emmanuel Macron for saying it was crucial not to “embarrass” Moscow.”We should not embarrass Russia so that, when the conflict ceases, we can construct an exit ramp via diplomatic means,” Macron said in a Saturday talk with regional papers, adding that he was “reassured that it is France’s job to be a mediation force.”
“Calls to avoid humiliating Russia can only disgrace France and every other country which would demand it,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba responded on Twitter.
“But Russia is the one who embarrasses itself.” We must all concentrate on how to place Russia in its rightful location. This will result in peace and the saving of lives.”
“The war’s horrible repercussions can be halted at any time… if one person in Moscow just gives the order,” Zelensky added, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “And the globe as a whole is obviously humiliated by the fact that there is still no such order.”
Ukraine now claims that its goal is to drive Russian forces back as much as possible on the ground, relying on upgraded missile systems promised in recent days by the US and the UK to help it win the conflict.

“There is no reason to hold negotiations until we obtain weapons in their full amount, until we enhance our positions, until we push them [Russian forces] back as much as possible to the boundaries of Ukraine,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said on national television when asked about Macron’s meditational offer.
The Western armaments, Moscow claims, will “add fuel to the fire,” but will not change the course of a “special military operation” to disarm Ukraine and cleanse it of dangerous nationalists.

According to the Tass news agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday that Western sanctions would have no impact on the country’s oil sales and expected a significant increase in earnings from energy exports this year.
