Four people have been killed by a gunman wielding a weapon and a handgun at a Tulsa healthcare center on a hospital campus on Wednesday, authorities said, the latest in a string of fatal shooting incidents around the country in recent weeks.
Deputy Police Chief Jonathan Brooks verified the number of people killed, as well as the fact that the gunman was also killed, presumably by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect, a black man in his 35s or 40s, had a long rifle and a handgun during the four to five-minute attack.
Police were called about a man with a rifle on the second story of the Natalie Medical Building in Tulsa, which “developed into an armed gunman incident,” according to Captain Richard Meulenberg of ABC.
Following a spate of latest gun crimes across the country, such as the murder of 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school by an 18-year-old attacker wielding an AR-15-style rifle eight days ago, Democratic politicians have stepped up their calls for stricter gun laws, while Republicans have emphasized increased school safety.
The schism reflects a partisan gap that has blocked action in Congress and several state legislatures on how to effectively respond to the country’s high number of gun-related deaths.
Deputy Police Chief Eric Dalgleish said it remained unknown what precipitated the tragic assault in Tulsa.”It seems both weapons were fired on the site at some point,” Dalgleish added. “When the officers arrived, they heard shots inside the building, which led them to the second level.”Police arrived 3 minutes after handlers received the call at 4:52 p.m. and got in touch with the gunman at 5:01 p.m., as per Dalgleish.

“I was quite pleased with what we know so far about our cops’ response,” he said.
The time it has taken policemen in Uvalde, Texas, to approach the gunman last week during the horrific killing at Robb Elementary School has become a focal point of the inquiry. Officers had to wait for an hour to enter the classroom where the attack was taking place.
Several people were injured, according to Tulsa Police Capt. Richard Meulenberg and the medical complex was a “disastrous sight.” It was not entirely apparent how many people were injured.
The deceased has yet to be identified, according to police and hospital officials.
Because of the incident at the Natalie Medical Building, St. Francis Health System shut down its facility on Wednesday afternoon. An outpatient surgery clinic and a breast health center are located in the Natalie building. On the second story, Dalgleish added, officers found the shooter and numerous victims, as well as an orthopedic clinic.
Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum declared, “This campus is sacred ground for our community.” “This institution has been a site wherein superheroes come to work every day to save people’s lives in our community for years.”
“Right now, my thoughts are with the victims,” Bynum continued. If we want to talk about policy, we can do it in the future, but not now.”Around 5 p.m., Philip Tankersley, 27, was leaving his father’s room at St. Francis Medical when hospital officials advised them to remain away from the windows because there was an armed person in the house across the street.

Tankersley said he and his mom hid in his father’s hospital room for more than an hour, collecting data from the television news and passing nurses. He stated they worried if they were safe in the hospital after hearing “code silver” and “Level 1 trauma” declared on the hospital speakers.
“I wasn’t too concerned because the two persons I needed to keep an eye on were in the same room as me,” he explained. “However, it was undeniably a ‘this is happening right now’ moment.”
According to a representative for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, agents were also on the scene. At a local high school, a center for families to locate their loved ones was established.
The shooting came more than two weeks after a shooter opened fire in a Buffalo, New York, supermarket, killing ten Black people in a racial attack, according to authorities. Even though single-death instances constituted the majority of gun fatalities, the Memorial Day weekend saw many mass shootings across the country.
“I wasn’t too concerned because the two persons I needed to keep an eye on were in the same room as me,” he explained. “However, it was undeniably a ‘this is happening right now’ moment.”
According to the Associated Press/USA Today/Northeastern University mass killing database, there have been 12 shootings involving four or more individuals since January. As per the records, 76 people were killed in the shootings, including 31 adults and children in Buffalo and Texas. The shooters in the attacks are not included in the death toll.
